There are three main dangerous volatile organic compounds found in conventional paints:
- Benzene
Benzene is a sweet smelling compound that off-gases easily. Inhalation in the short term causes headaches and dizziness; in the long term it causes cancer and leukemia. Benzene affects the nervous system and can cause chromosomal damage to unborn children.
- Toluene
Toluene is another sweet smelling substance. It affects the nervous system causing lightheadedness, dizziness and may cause liver and kidney damage as well as hearing loss and brain damage in small children.
- Formaldehyde
The EPA considers formaldehyde a carcinogen. It is very toxic and strong smelling. Formaldehyde is an allergy and asthma trigger. It also causes watery eyes, skin rashes and bronchitis.
There are three alternatives to conventional paints. They are:
- Low VOC paint
You need to read the label for low-VOC paints carefully because the amount of VOCs contained in low-VOC paints varies a lot. The maximum VOC content in latex based paints is 250 g/l; in oil based paints the maximum is 380 g/l. These regulations are designed for outdoor air levels and so anything approaching these numbers is not recommended for indoor air levels. Generally latex based paints are lower in VOCs than oil based paints.
- Zero VOC paint
This is exactly what it says: free of VOCs and by far the best choice for all paint in your house, especially for indoor paint. Recommended is the Insl-x Coatings Naturescape Zero VOC Paint range available at Amazon.
- Natural paint
Natural paint is made from traditional recipes for paint some of which have been used since the dawn of time. Natural paints are VOC free. You normally mix them with water. The Sistine Chapel and many of the great works of the Renaissance were painted with natural paints. Nowadays natural paints can be bought to suit any surface.
