Saving Water
The Importance of water conservation and how to cut down on your water consumption
4. Install water-saving shower heads and low-flow faucet aerators.
The average shower uses 5 gallons of water a minute whereas a water-saving shower head such as the Oxygenics 80227 uses only 2.5 gallons of water a minute without any reduction in water pressure. Use this link to read more about the Oxygenics 80227 TriSpa Shower. Similarly water consumption in the kitchen and bathroom can be dramatically reduced with low-flow faucet aerators. 5. Put plastic bottles in your toilet tank.
Simply put a couple of inches of sand or pebbles in a plastic bottle and fill it with water. Then place the water bottles in the toilet tank away from the flush mechanism. Finally check that the toilet still flushes properly.
6. Insulate your water pipes.
Buy pre-slit foam pipe insulation from any hardware store and put it over your water pipes. You will get hot water quicker and waste less shower water waiting for the water to heat up.
7. Take shorter showers.
An 8 minute shower with a standard shower head (not a water-saving shower head) uses 40 gallons of water. This is the equivalent of taking a bath.
8. Don't run the water while you brush your teeth.
After you wet your toothbrush turn off the water faucet until you rinse your mouth.
9. Only run full loads in your clothes washing machine.
Also avoid those cycles like the permanent cycle that use extra water. Lots of people now only use cold water in their washing machines to cut down on heating costs.
10. Don't use a sink garbage disposal unit.
So called 'garburators' use water to dispose of food waste. Much better to recycle food and other organic waste with a composter tumbler. Click here to learn more about the Envirocycle Backyard Composter.
11. Don't rinse your razor under running water.
Fill the sink with warm water and rinse your razor in that instead.
12. Don't rinse soapy dishes under running water and don't clean vegetables under running water.
Better to fill a second sink with water for rinsing soapy dishes and cleaning vegetables, or use a bowl of water.
13. Keep a bottle of drinking water in the fridge.
This means you don't need to to run the water faucet to let the water go cold when you want a drink of water.
